Open Writing systems or Kanji + Hanzi. Work from recognition to recall and then to words.
Start Corpus linguistics. Learn how a sample was collected before counting words or drawing conclusions about a population.
Try this: Count a word in two equally sized samples, then inspect its surrounding sentences. Ask whether the samples represent comparable situations.
You should get: You can distinguish a count from an explanation of why people used the word. The corpus course supplies worked examples and answers.
