Greek across periods

Choose a period before choosing a grammar or audio model. The Ancient track currently uses Classical Attic forms; the Modern track uses contemporary Standard Modern Greek.

Mycenaean

Late Bronze Age · Linear B

An early attested form; requires a different script and specialized philology.

Archaic / Homeric

Epic and early poetry

A literary mixture, not a recording of one everyday city dialect.

Classical Attic and other dialects

Classical literature, inscriptions, philosophy

Attic is one ancient dialect alongside Ionic, Doric, Aeolic and others.

Koine

Hellenistic and Roman periods

Useful for New Testament and many later ancient texts; overlaps with but is not identical to Classical Attic.

Medieval / Byzantine

Many registers across centuries

Do not assume one uniform transition stage.

Modern

Contemporary language

Different sound system and grammar; the dative and productive infinitive of Ancient Greek do not carry over as ordinary modern paradigms.

Greek alphabet with the modern monotonic accent system. Device speech, when available, is only a model for that installed voice; historical and unsupported varieties have no automatic voice here.

Published: a first rule with a worked example and answer, introductory vocabulary, and basic expressions. Next: sound contrasts → inflection and sentence patterns → connected reading/listening → independent use. Modern pronunciation is a living system, not a reconstruction of Classical Attic. Γεια σου is familiar singular; γεια σας is plural or respectful.
