Hebrew · Biblical: start here

Hebrew with Masoretic vowel points and cantillation in pointed editions.

Track direction: Read noun phrases before interpreting verbal discourse.

Published below: one grammar rule, worked example, exercise with an answer, introductory words and reading forms. Planned next: sound contrasts, wider grammar and guided reading/listening. This is the start of the course.

Hebrew: Biblical and Modern

The tracks share much vocabulary and writing history, but they serve different goals. Neither a modern conversation model nor a simple past/future label fully explains biblical verbal discourse.

Biblical Hebrew

Ancient texts in several periods and genres

Niqqud and cantillation in Masoretic editions belong to a later transmission tradition. Learn morphology, syntax and genre together.

Mishnaic / Rabbinic Hebrew

Rabbinic texts

A further historical layer with grammatical and lexical differences.

Modern Hebrew

Contemporary spoken and written use

Usually unpointed outside teaching and special contexts. Contemporary verb use and vocabulary require their own course.

Reading traditions

Israeli, Sephardi, Ashkenazi, Yemenite and others

The pronunciation of a biblical passage depends on the chosen tradition; one voice is not universal.

Try it: Is niqqud identical to the consonantal spelling of the earliest biblical manuscripts?

Show the answer

No. The vowel-pointing systems were developed later; distinguish written consonants, pointing and reading tradition.

Pronunciation & how to use these phrases

Hebrew with Masoretic vowel points and cantillation in pointed editions. Device speech, when available, is only a model for that installed voice; historical and unsupported varieties have no automatic voice here.

Published: a first rule with a worked example and answer, introductory vocabulary, and reading forms. Next: sound contrasts → inflection and sentence patterns → connected reading/listening → independent use. Biblical Hebrew includes different periods and genres. Translating qatal as past and yiqtol as future without attending to construction and discourse is unreliable. Reading traditions vary.
