From written signs to everyday conversation.
A set of phonetic symbols used to show Mandarin pronunciation. Syllables are assembled from an initial, a medial or final, and a tone.
The first version was created in 1913 and released in 1918. It remains a practical reading, dictionary, and keyboard tool in Taiwan.
Mandarin names a group of spoken varieties and standardized spoken forms. Traditional and Simplified describe character conventions. Either writing system can represent Mandarin; Traditional characters also write Cantonese and other Chinese languages.
Start here for Taiwan. Vocabulary, phonology and character forms can differ from mainland standards.
A national spoken standard, not the accent of every Mandarin-speaking town.
A regional standard with local vocabulary and a multilingual context.
Traditional standards are not identical: Taiwanese and Hong Kong preferred forms can differ.
Learn the official mappings and their context; do not strip strokes by intuition.
Try it: Does changing 國 to 国 change a Mandarin sentence into a different spoken language?
No. It changes the written form. Pronunciation and regional vocabulary are separate choices.

Pinyin marks tones: mā high, má rising, mǎ low/dipping, mà falling; unmarked syllables are light. Third tones often stay low in speech, and two third tones change the first to a rising tone. 不 and 一 also change tone in context. Reading aids show citation tones. Taiwan-oriented Traditional characters are paired with pinyin; the writing area has Zhuyin practice.
Learn the reply with the request: 有/沒有 for availability, 可以/不可以 for permission. The phrasebook uses Taiwan terms such as 公車, 計程車 and 便利商店. Use the native text when showing a phrase to someone.

| Construction | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| number + classifier + noun | 一本書 | one book |
| demonstrative + classifier | 這本書 | this book |
| person classifier | 兩個人 | two people |
| flat-item classifier | 三張票 | three tickets |
| plural pronoun | 我們 | we |
我買了兩本書。
I bought two books.
How it works: 兩 counts items and 本 is the classifier for books; 書 itself does not change.
Start with subject + verb + object. Verbs do not change for person or number. 我 wǒ = I; 你 nǐ = you; 我們 wǒmen = we.
Traditional characters and Taiwan vocabulary are used here. Pinyin tone marks show dictionary tones; actual connected speech includes tone changes.
