Consonants carry an inherent vowel; dependent signs change it. Conjunct letters and spoken vowel changes make whole-word practice essential.

The Bengali script developed from eastern Brahmi-derived writing traditions. Related forms are used for Assamese, with differences in inventory and usage.

Transliteration
The labels distinguish written letters; they are not a claim that modern speech preserves every Sanskrit sound distinction.
Read
পানি pāni = water. Short/long vowel spellings do not imply the same length contrast as Sanskrit.
Practise
Identify ক in ক, কি, কু and কো. Then study a conjunct inside a complete word.
