Describe an optical result without guessing its cause

Before you begin: Viewfinder’s fixed-viewpoint experiment. A camera and any lens are enough.

A lens fingerprint is a repeatable pattern in pictures, not a personality rating. Separate geometric distortion, out-of-focus rendering and flare from focus mistakes, movement and processing. A comparison becomes useful when it tells another person what to repeat.

Optical aberrations are departures from ideal image formation. One symptom can have several causes. A soft corner, for example, is insufficient evidence for a defective lens without checking focus, alignment and the subject plane.

Worked example & observations

Original test sheet: photograph a flat printed grid square-on, then a foreground object with small background lights, then the same object with a bright lamp just outside the frame. Keep viewpoint and processing constant within each pair. Record bent grid lines, the shape of out-of-focus lights and loss of contrast as observations. Do not infer a specific aberration from the thumbnail alone.

A corner becomes sharper after you refocus on it, while the centre becomes softer. Does this establish that the lens is simply low resolution? Name a follow-up.

Show answer and reasoning

No. Focus surface, target alignment or field curvature could contribute. Repeat with careful alignment, multiple focus positions and a second aperture. Record how the centre and corners trade sharpness before attributing the cause.

Watch for: Automatic lens correction can hide distortion and vignetting. Record whether it was enabled; do not mix corrected and uncorrected files.
