Before you begin
No music theory required. Use your voice, hands, a metronome and a keyboard or piano-roll instrument. The exercises use Western 12-tone equal temperament and 4/4 meter; these are a chosen starting system, not a description of all music. No paid software is required to follow the written exercises.
Working toward: Make an eight-bar study and explain its pulse, note choices, chords and one deliberate variation.

Study in order. Attempt each exercise before opening its answer. These are published foundations; advanced stages remain planned.
1. Keep the pulse; change the rhythm
Before this lesson: None. Outcome: count a bar and distinguish tempo from event density.
A pulse is the recurring beat you can count. Rhythm describes where sounds and silences occur against time. Tempo gives pulse speed; in this lesson BPM counts quarter-note beats per minute. Meter organizes beats into recurring groups. In 4/4, a bar contains four quarter-note beats. The top number is four; the bottom number identifies the quarter-note unit.
Count '1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and' evenly. Each 'and' is halfway between beats, making eight straight eighth-note positions in one bar. At 90 BPM a quarter note lasts 60/90 seconds, about 0.667; an eighth lasts about 0.333. Adding more notes does not change that tempo. Swing changes the subdivision relationship; it is outside this first straight-grid exercise.
Tap your foot on the four numbers. Clap on beats 2 and 4. Then add one clap on the and after 3 without speeding your foot up. The new off-beat event changes the rhythm while the underlying pulse stays fixed. If coordination is difficult, count aloud and practice only two beats, then reconnect the bar.
On a piano roll, set 4/4 and 90 BPM, choose an eighth-note grid and use any short percussive sound. Enter the three clap positions below. Loop four bars. Start and stop on bar boundaries so you can hear whether the pattern returns to beat 1 predictably.

You hear three claps over four steady foot taps. The off-beat clap comes between beats 3 and 4. Four bars last about 10.667 seconds, excluding any count-in.
Your turn
At 120 BPM, how long is a quarter note, an eighth note and four bars of 4/4? Move the clap from beat 4 to 4-and: did the tempo change? Count the altered pattern twice.

Quarter: 60/120 = 0.5 seconds. Eighth: 0.25 seconds. Four bars: 4 bars × 4 beats × 0.5 = 8 seconds. The last clap is delayed by one eighth note; the pulse stays at 120 BPM. Count through the silence on beat 4 instead of stretching the bar to wait for the clap.
Watch for: BPM needs a beat unit. An eighth-note click is not automatically a quarter-note beat. Do not restart counting at each sound; rests consume time too.

Before this lesson: Lesson 1. Outcome: spell a major scale and a natural minor scale using semitone steps.
Pitch is the high/low quality we hear. In the 12-tone equal-tempered system used here, an octave divides into twelve equal semitone steps; the octave repeats a note name at twice the frequency. A whole tone is two semitones. On a keyboard, every adjacent key, white or black, is one semitone away. E–F and B–C are already adjacent without an intervening black key.
A major scale follows 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1 semitones. Starting on C produces C D E F G A B C. Starting on G requires G A B C D E F♯ G. F♯ preserves the required whole step after E and the semitone into G. Each of the seven letter names appears once before the octave repeats.
Natural minor follows 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2. A natural minor is A B C D E F G A. It shares C major's pitch collection but has A as its tonal center when the music establishes it. Merely starting a melody on A does not prove its key. Harmony, emphasis and endings help establish a center. Harmonic and melodic minor are later topics.
Play each scale slowly up and down. Next play only its first, third and fifth degrees, counting one note per beat. Listen for which pitch feels like a point of rest, then end several short phrases there. Major and minor are structural patterns, not universal promises of happy or sad emotion.

The step pattern remains the same when a scale is transposed. G major needs F♯. C major and A natural minor use the same note names but can organize musical attention differently.

Build D major and E natural minor. Spell each with seven different letters before repeating the tonic. Which notes require sharps? Explain why writing G♭ instead of F♯ in D major obscures the scale spelling.

D major: D E F♯ G A B C♯ D. E natural minor: E F♯ G A B C D E. D major uses F♯ and C♯; E natural minor uses F♯. In this tuning G♭ and F♯ share a sounding keyboard key, but spelling the third degree F♯ preserves one F and one G in the scale. D E G♭ G... repeats G and omits F.
Watch for: Counting white keys as equal distances gives wrong intervals. Enharmonic equivalence on this keyboard does not make note spelling irrelevant in notation.

Before this lesson: Lessons 1–2. Outcome: distinguish chord identity from voicing and make one deliberate arrangement change.
A triad stacks a root, a third and a fifth. A major triad has semitone offsets 0, 4 and 7 from its root; a minor triad has 0, 3 and 7. C major is C E G; A minor is A C E. Count distances from the root, not from the preceding note, when using those offsets.
Voicing chooses the register and arrangement of chord tones. Inversion identifies which chord member is lowest: root position has the root in the bass; first inversion has the third; second inversion has the fifth. C4 E4 A4 is A minor in first inversion, written Am/C when the bass needs to be explicit. It is still an A-minor triad, not a new chord merely because A is on top.
Try C4 E4 G4 followed by C4 E4 A4. Two notes remain fixed and one rises two semitones. That small motion is a voice-leading choice: individual parts move smoothly while harmony changes. It is useful, not mandatory; a large leap can also be intentional.
Create eight bars at 90 BPM in 4/4. Hold one chord for each bar using the voicings below. In bars 1–4 use the rhythm from lesson 1; in bars 5–7 remove the off-beat clap so the texture changes. In bar 8 remove all claps and let the last chord finish. This is an original classroom study, not an attributed song or an owner release. Save a version with and without the change and compare the phrase ending.

The first two bars retain C and E while the upper note changes. Bar 4 puts B under a G-major chord. Eight bars last about 21.333 seconds before any reverb tail or count-in. Removing claps in bar 8 makes an audible change without changing chord identity.
Your turn
Spell D minor and F major. Give a first-inversion voicing of D minor. Replace bar 6 with that voicing and name one note shared with the original Am/C. Explain whether keeping the same tempo forces you to keep the same rhythm.

D minor = D F A; F major = F A C. A first-inversion D-minor voicing is F3 A3 D4 (Dm/F). It shares A with A minor. Register changes do not change which pitch classes belong to the chord. The tempo can stay fixed while event positions, durations and instrumentation change. State one intended result, such as a lower bass in bar 6, then listen to both versions and decide whether it serves the phrase.
Watch for: A chord symbol does not specify every octave, rhythm or sound. Do not confuse first inversion with moving every note up one octave. Check that each bar still contains exactly four beats.
